FIVE KEY MOMENTS IN KYGO'S MUSIC CAREER.

16 January, 2019

You might think he's been on the international scene for some time, but Kygo's music career exploded just five years ago. Since then, the Norwegian DJ has constantly been under the spotlight at massive moments in clubbing history - and he's produced endless hits that have become anthems for new generations.

Kyrre Gørvell-Dahll's restlessness, versatility, and boundless energy have been a constant since he was a child. Born in Singapore, his family were constantly on the move, where he soaked up the colours and sounds of countries as diverse as Brazil, Egypt, Japan, and Kenya. Returning to his birthplace in Norway after serving in the army as a fire-fighter for a year, one of his best friends infected him with the electronic music bug.

Various factors have come into play in his journey from that teenage dream to a meteoric ascent to his current success. Here's our run-down of five key moments in Kygo's music career.

“I SEE FIRE”

All fledgling musicians need to get a break - to leave obscurity behind and stand up and face the world. But what Kygo achieved with his remix of Ed Sheeran's “I See Fire” was more than a break. It was a nuclear explosion that burst on to the scene and catapulted Kygo to stardom. The figures speak for themselves: more than 55 million plays on SoundCloud and more than 65 million YouTube hits.

The track was literally life-changing. His name was all over the electronic music industry and he went on making remixes for artists as prominent as Marvin Gaye, Ellie Goulding, and Coldplay. It was no surprise, then, that the young Norwegian caught the eye of Sony Music International and went on to become one of their leading artists. And it couldn't be a more fruitful union. His first single, "Firestone", racked up more than 324 million YouTube hits.

FROM GUEST TO RESIDENT AT USHUAÏA IBIZA

The island of Ibiza changed the landscape of international electronic music. This corner of the Mediterranean is a Mecca for any DJ! A lot of artists try to conquer it. Few manage to. And even fewer stay. Was Kygo's success in Ibiza essential to his music career? Yes... and he managed it in record time! The DJ has achieved what many could only dream of - he's carved a niche for himself on the Ibiza scene with an event at the Ushuaïa Ibiza Beach Hotel.

The world's most famous open-air club opened its doors in Ibiza in 2015, the year it hosted a truly memorable performance at its closing party from the much-missed Avicii. Kygo's music career in Ibiza had kicked off... A year later Kygo came back to play three dates that converted even the most skeptic - there was no doubt the young Norwegian deserved to be resident DJ for the summer season.

For the past two summers, Kygo has finished off the week at Ushuaïa Ibiza Beach Hotel turning his Sunday event into a must for clubbers from all over the world who flock to the white island to enjoy the best music.

RÍO PERFORMANCE 2016

One of the biggest honours for a sports person is to take part in the Olympic Games, and it doesn't get any better for a musician than being asked to perform at the closing ceremony as he did in Río de Janeiro in 2016. This young Norwegian DJ can be safe in the knowledge he's one of the few DJs ever to have done it. Under driving rain, he got hundreds of thousands of Brazilians moving in the stadium, as millions of people across the world watched on TV.

And as if anything was missing in Kygo's music career, he was also the icon chosen by to launch the new Olympic Channel. In the words of the DJ himself, he's a "sports fanatic" and this collaboration was "a dream come true".

TROPICAL HOUSE, MORE THAN A STYLE

There are two things that can define a DJ as the best representative of a music style: having a long-standing career playing the style, or giving the style a breakthrough that lasts on the scene. And that's exactly what Kygo has done. Without actually being a "tropical house DJ" he managed to popularise the sound thanks to his collaboration with Justin Bieber on the track "What do You Mean”.

KYGO LIFE Y KYGO VIBE

DJs have become huge, and not just for their music. Their image, tastes, and lifestyle are imitated by thousands and thousands of fans all over the world. Kygo was one of the first to realise this trend and started a new strategy to diversify his brand. And so Kygo Life and Kygo Vibe were born - fashion and accessories labels for DJs with a strong Scandinavian influence. Yet another hit for Kygo's career!

"Behind the music there's craftsmanship, and the drive to continually improve and perfect each and every step of the process. This is the philosophy that's inspired Kygo Life. It's my goal to make people feel good, in the same way, I want people to be happy when they listen to my music" said the Norwegian DJ. We love him!
