Sant Antoni de Portmany was a fishing port for its over two thousand years of history. The first hotel opened there in 1933 but the locals had to wait till the Spanish Civil War had ended -later dubbed the “hunger years”- for the area and the island itself to begin to recover.

The unstoppable development and expansion of the tourist industry really took off in the fifties, when several leisure and entertainment complexes were unveiled by well-renowned local Ibizan businessmen like Pepe Roselló and Abel Matutes.

In summer, thousands of people congregate on its most popular terraces, bars and restaurants on the seafront to watch the setting sun to the beat of the mythical chill-out sounds of the Café del Mar, which has been providing the soundscape for these world-famous sunsets since 1978. Rounds of applause envelop the beach after the sun has gone down and the music has ceased, in a ritual that has become a tourist attraction for all those who visit, but also a tradition for the island’s residents themselves.
